This 5 night guided tour takes us takes us along the world-famous Glacier Express train across the Swiss Alps. We’ll start in Zermatt, home of the incomparable Matterhorn and the mighty Gorner glacier. After 2 days exploring this region, we’ll take a short transfer to Riederalp, a tiny village tucked away at the edge of the Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. Then we’ll travel 1st class on the Glacier Express train, enjoying panoramic views as we cross the Swiss countryside toward St Moritz and the quiet hiker’s haven of Pontresina, home of the Morteratsch glacier and numerous impressive peaks. See Switzerland in style and enjoy the surprising depth of this awe-inspiring country.
Our typical day starts with a continental buffet breakfast at our hotel – delicious fresh baked bread and croissants, local meats and cheeses, cereal, fruit, coffee and juice – which gives us the energy needed for the upcoming tours. Soon we’ll be out on the trail, where you’ll get to choose between an easier walk or more strenuous hike for the day. Each morning, you’ll be handed a lunch to carry, and at a mid-point along the way we’ll choose a beautiful spot to stop and enjoy our picnic. We get a lot of compliments on our imaginative lunches – making them something to look forward to as well!
We should finish our hike around 4 pm, giving you time to wash up, relax, perhaps do a bit of shopping in town or relax in our fun hotel pool and spa. After that, we’ll enjoy dinner together at our hotel or another local restaurant. These are usually multi-course feasts, featuring both local and international specialties like chicken, fish, or cheese fondue. Our hotels enjoy excellent reputations for their fine cuisine. We’ll leave one dinner free in Pontresina for you to explore on your own.
Zermatt – Arrive in Switzerland, and transfer by train to our meeting point in Zermatt. Zermatt is a world-famous resort, delightfully car-free and extremely walkable.
Enjoy the atmosphere of this classic mountain village, with the massive Matterhorn dominating the landscape. We’ll meet and talk about our tour before settling in to our comfortable 4-star hotel on the edge of town.
Zermatt – Taking quiet trails through fields and forest, we have a range of choices up to the wide ridge of Gornergrat, past marmots and small glacial lakes, to what has to be one of the finest viewpoints in Europe.
The jumbled mass of the Gorner glacier stretches out before us, and behind that, Dom, Monte Rosa, the Breithorn and the Matterhorn form a spectacular backdrop.
Riederalp – Transfer in the morning to Riederalp, high in the mountains above Brig, at the foot of the massive Aletsch glacier. Riederalp is reached only by cable car, but in typical Swiss fashion, the trip there is easy and enjoyable.
The Aletsch glacier is Riederalp’s top attraction. It’s 14 miles long, and dramatically winds from the top of the Jungfrau to the giant moraine walls behind Riedealp. We’ll have many options for a great hike through ancient pine-larch forests with stunning views, and back to Riederalp for the night.
Pontresina – Leaving Riederalp by cable car, we’ll hook up with the Glacier Express train today. With 91 tunnels and 291 bridges, the Glacier Express is an engineering marvel.
Our comfortable 1st class cars and giant picture windows give us a chance to sit back and relax on this beautiful full-day journey across Switzerland. Dinner will be on your own tonight in Pontresina.
Pontresina – There are many lovely trails near Pontresina. One of our favorites leads to the Morteratsch glacier, an impressive destination, and a moderate climb to the Boval hut rewards you with panoramic views of white-capped giants in every direction.
Alternately, a day exploring the nearby Swiss National Park is a great way to spot wildlife. Take a short train ride to Zernez, home of the Swiss National Park headquarters, where trails into the park offer a great chance to see Steinbock, Marmots, Golden Eagles and more.
depart – After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll say our good-byes and leave for our post-trip destinations.
