We offer self-guided tours throughout North America with the same style and attention to detail as our European tours. We’re always looking for great hotels and memorable locations, and a combination of classic hikes and off-the-beaten-path finds.
Check out our offerings on our sister site, Rubicon Outdoors:
Self-guided Lake Tahoe Adventure – If you haven’t been to Lake Tahoe before, you’re going to wonder what took you so long. The lake is an absolute gem, and there are endless hikes of all ranges. This is also a great multi-sport region with lots of bike trails and of course, one of the world’s prettiest lakes to paddle or sail on. This trip can be arranged year-round, but is best for hiking in early summer or fall, June, or Sept-Oct.
Self-guided Best of the Colorado Rockies – The Colorado Rockies are famous for their jagged peaks reaching up above 14,000′, but you’re going to fall in love with their trails, lakes, wilderness and wildflowers. We combine 3 nights in laid-back Crested Butte with 3 nights in Aspen and a final night in Boulder for the perfect Colorado getaway. Best done July-September, but shoulder season tours are also possible.
Self-guided New England Sea to Summit – Summer in the northeast would not be complete without exploring the rocky coast of the North Atlantic or the rugged peaks of the White Mountains. Our self guided New England Sea to Summit Adventure does both. Start just north of Boston in Gloucester, America’s oldest continuous seaport, then move on to 4 nights in the rugged White Mountains of New Hampshire, one of the greatest outdoor playgrounds in the northeast. With so many trails to choose from, there’s something for everyone.
Self-guided Alberta – Banff and Jasper – Discover the magic of the Canadian Rockies! Huge limestone peaks, turquoise lakes, wild animals, and abundant trails. You’ll spend 3 nights in Banff and 3 nights in low-key Jasper exploring mountain valleys and glacier-fed rivers while relaxing in a comfortable hotel each night. The hiking options are nearly endless… iconic Lake Louise and the Plain of the Six Glaciers, Moraine Lake and Valley of the Ten Peaks, Maligne Lake… you will not lack for options.
Self-guided Northern Arizona Highlights – Arizona is our home state, and we are happy to share the Southwestern charm with you. Prescott, the Grand Canyon and Sedona are all gorgeous in unique and surprising ways. Since summers are so hot, this is best as an off-season tour, Oct-May, and is fantastic in winter.
Self-guided Southern Utah Highlights – Southern Utah is home to some of the most popular parks in America, and with very good reason. Bryce and Zion are unique and otherworldly, with beautiful canyons and fantastical spires. Since it’s so busy, it’s nice to avoid the mid-summer months and try to hit the edges of the season if you want summer temps, Apr-May or Sept-Nov, or come in the winter if you like to avoid the crowds.
Our itineraries vary by tour, and are very similar to our Swiss and European tours. Your hotels are booked, and your tour packet includes a range of hikes and other activities to choose from each day.
Our North American self-guided tours assume you’ll be renting a car to get around, or driving your own if you live nearby, but some tours include shuttles to or from trailheads or even car shuttles (an option on our Colorado tour) while you hike from one town to the next.
Some meals are included and suggestions are given for exploring on your own when they are not included.
As always, tours can always be modified to fit your schedule, and can easily be combined if you have time for a longer tour to different regions. Check them out by clicking on the links above!
