If you’re looking for a quiet getaway to fairy-tale Switzerland, the self-guided Mürren tour is the perfect combination of a quaint village setting, gorgeous hiking, huge waterfalls, and spectacular mountain scenery. This is very similar to our Jungfrau tour, but choosing just one village for a relaxing base. Spend five nights in peaceful Mürren, with practically more cows than people, and an unforgettable view of the mountains with abundant wildflowers. Always a favorite on our tours, Mürren is a car-free village perched atop a cliff, just uphill from Gimmelwald and surrounded by the unbelievable panorama of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Breithorn mountains. It is, in my opinion, the best all-around hiking destination in the Alps.

Your typical day starts with a delicious buffet breakfast at our hotel – a feast of freshly baked bread and croissants, local meats and cheeses, cereal, fruit, eggs, coffee and freshly squeezed juice – which gives you the energy needed for the day ahead. Before setting out on your hike, visit a bakery and market for lunch supplies, or bring some money for a stop in one of the alpine restaurants along your route. Soon, you’ll be out on the trail for 6-8 hours, with many hiking options to choose from.

Mürren also makes a great base for non-hikers, and there are many great sights to choose from in the region.  We’ll send you info on many of our favorites, such as the Schilthorn cable car, Jungfraujoch train, and Trümmelbach falls.  If you like, this can be combined with easy 1-2 hour walks to traditional restaurants with fantastic views.

You should finish your hike around 4 pm, giving you time to wash up, relax, perhaps visit the village pool/spa, or just gaze upon the outside panorama from your room balcony. After that, you’ll enjoy dinner at your hotel restaurant. These are multi-course feasts, often centered on local specialties like bratwurst, rösti, or cheese fondue, but may also feature chicken, fish, or other continental specialties. Our hotels all serve fabulous food, and dinners will be hearty, filling, well-earned and very delicious. Typically we leave all dinner arrangements up to you, so you will have a chance to explore on your own.

Day 1

Mürren – Arrive in Switzerland, and transfer by train Mürren. There is a train station in both the Zürich and Geneva airports, and transferring to Mürren will be an easy introduction to Swiss precision and friendliness.

The trip itself is incredibly scenic, and takes about 4 hours. Mürren is an idyllic, car-free village, perched atop a sheer 3000ft. cliff above the waterfall-filled Lauterbrunnen valley (picture Yosemite with a Swiss village on top). You’ll have a chance to breathe the fresh mountain air and listen to the tinkle of not-so-distant cowbells before settling in to your hotel for the night. Dinner is on your own in Mürren.

Day 2

Mürren – One of our favorite hikes starts in town, and gently meanders up the hills to the pastoral setting at Spielboden.

Here you cross the Schiltbach stream, and start a steep and invigorating ascent to the local peak of Bryndli. Take your lunch enjoying birds-eye views of Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen valley, perhaps with a soaring golden eagle for company. From here the trail levels off, and becomes a relaxing stroll through flowery meadows to a quiet alpine hut at Bogangen. The trail back leads over a small ridge for more great views, before dropping back down to Mürren. Dinner is on your own in Mürren.

Non-hiking option: The Schilthorn cable car is a spectacular destination on the clear day.  It takes you to up to 10,000′ to the top of the Schilthorn mountain, with a revolving restaurant that delivers 360 degree birds-eye views of the entire region.  Your pass gives you 50% discounts on this and all other transport in the region.

Day 3

Mürren – A lovely panorama walk leads north out of the village through fields of wildflowers, past quiet farms at Grutschalp, and into hidden Soustal valley.

On the return trip, hike through fern-filled forests, and up to the beautiful panorama at Allmendhubel, before dropping down to the Blumental (“flower valley”). The mountains are particularly well-framed from this little corner above Mürren. A short, steep descent along the Mürren stream leads you back to town. Dinner is on your own in Mürren.

Non-hiking option: Allmendhubel is also accessible by cogwheel train right from Murren, with a nice restaurant, a creative and fun kids play area (great for families with small kids), and gorgeous views.  The restaurant here is a favorite destination to just spend a few hours at enjoying your surroundings, perhaps followed by a 45 minute downhill walk back to town.

Day 4

Mürren – The Upper Lauterbrunnen valley curls back beneath the white-capped Breithorn – considered by many to be the most perfect mountain in the region.

It’s also a nature preserve, and contains many wonderful hiking trails. One of our favorites takes you to the small farm at Obersteinberg, where the proprietors keep cows and make cheese by the same simple methods that have been used for centuries. This part of the valley also contains some of the area’s prettiest waterfalls. Dinner is on your own in Mürren.

Non-hiking option: Trümmelbach waterfalls, between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg in the bottom of the valley, makes a unique destination.  The waterfalls have cut a path so narrow, they appear to be falling inside the mountain.  There’s a small entrance fee, and access to a number of viewing platforms within the cliffs.  On the return, you may stop at the Winteregg restaurant, one train stop from Mürren, with an unforgettable outdoor panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.

Day 5

Mürren – A short morning train ride brings you to the Wengen, the quiet village on the opposite side of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Underneath the gorgeous backdrop of the glacier-draped Jungfrau, hike through forests and meadows to Kleine Scheidegg. Here you can watch avalanches peel off the Jungfrau, perhaps make an ascent of a local peak, and enjoy stunning, close-up views of the Eiger North Face throughout. Return to Mürren by train. Dinner is on your own in Mürren.

Non-hiking option: The most popular attraction in the region is also well worth your time.  The Jungfraujoch train leaves from Lauterbrunnen and takes you via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg up to the ridge between the Jungfrau and Mönch mountains at 11,371 ft.  This fascinating train tunnels through the Eiger, stopping a couple of time for views through tunnel windows, and finishes at the edge of the awesome Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps.
