Skydiving in the Alps

Skydiving in the Alps

It was not my idea to jump out of a helicopter. These days I’m generally pretty happy staying on the ground. But when you have a 17 yr old son along, we have group decisions to make.  Hiking is not his thing, and paragliding (my suggestion) was not exciting enough.

Skydive Interlaken

That’s how we ended up at Skydive Interlaken headquarters. There were butterflies… but the friendly, cheerful crew at Skydive Interlaken helped ease the nervousness somewhat, and seeing the other jumpers come in for landing made it feel not so unusual.

We had a short briefing and headed out to the site.

Just going up in the helicopter is exciting enough, how quickly you gain altitude and incredible views of the region. Then just as you’re getting used to that, the doors open at about 14,000 ft, you’re scooted to the side, and out you go.

My favorite moment was that first weightlessness as you drop back down. My son liked the later parts best, when you’ve slowed a bit and are dropping face down in the wind.  They say the freefall lasts about 45 seconds, and then you have many minutes of more graceful gliding back down to earth.

The entire jump is an unforgettable experience. Maybe not for everyone, but if you’re interested, definitely worthwhile.  And if it’s not for you, they offer scenic flights also… no jumping necessary!
